University Establishment in Cairns
In 1984 with the financial support of Mulgrave Shire Council, W.S Cummings prepared a submission to the Queensland Government on behalf of the Far North Queensland Regional Unity and Cooperation Conference that set in motion the process of establishing a University Campus in Cairns.
1981
Upgrading the Cairns Airport
In March 1984 a Qantas Boeing 747 took off from Cairns Airport bound for Honolulu from an airport upgraded to take large wide bodied jets on long distance overseas flights.
A key document in the process of convincing the State & Federal Governments to provide support and funding to the Cairns Port Authority to undertake the project was a submission prepared by WS(Bill) Cummings in his then position as manager of the Far North Queensland Promotion Bureau.

The Pacific Asia Travel Association Report
WS (Bill) Cummings as then manager of the Far North Queensland Promotion Bureau played a key part in convincing the Pacific Asia Travel Association to carry out a study into the Cairns region's potential as an international tourist destination and then coordinate the research team visit.

The Australian National Travel Association Study
WS (Bill) Cummings as then manager of the Ingham District Research and Promotion Bureau played a key role in convincing the Australian National Travel Association to carry out a study into the tourism potential of Northern Queensland. This ground breaking study laid the foundations for much of the
advances of the Cairns Far North Queensland region in tourism in the following decades.
